Titan Lives Up To Its Name
Cranes & Lifting, May 2011 issue - by Greg Keane
Titan Cranes has been a supplier and hirer of Jaso tower cranes for some time, but its most recent placements indicate that the word “titan” is appropriate to describe the company’s latest machines.
Recently two Jaso J600-24t Series II hammerhead tower cranes have been placed on a Hindmarsh Constructions project in Adelaide and a further J600-24t Series II has been erected on the NewActon Nishi project being built in Canberra by PBS Constructions.
The Adelaide cranes have been erected with a freestanding height of 68 metres and 58m and a 72m and 68.5m jib, while the Canberra crane has a freestanding height of 72m and jib length of 68.5m. Both the Adelaide and Canberra jobs are architecturally complex: the two cranes cover the site in Adelaide while in Canberra the choice of the Jaso avoided the need to employ a second tower crane on the site for heavy lifting operations. The crane can comfortably handle the 12 tonne precast panels and heavy steel girders of up to 19.8t that are the largest components of the project. The lack of ties to the building and compact tower size of the J600-24t is also a benefit for the builders on these projects.
The J600-24t replaces the Jaso J600-20t Series I and has a strong load chart, lifting 4.1t at its maximum radius of 85m. Maximum capacity is 48t using a shortened jib and 24t with the full jib in place. The crane’s free-standing height of 98m is a key factor in gaining work, while the semi flattop design means the crane is both easy to erect and stable in operation. The ease of erection is assisted by Jaso’s attention to containing the maximum weight of components.
Titan managing director Damon Hanlin believes the J600-24t is the largest electric tower crane currently operating in Australia, and says the quality of the Jaso offerings places them on a par with other well known European manufacturers, while their competitive pricing makes them the best value for money tower crane on the market.
Titan will soon take delivery of the first production Jaso J420 tower crane, which fits between the J600 and J300 and follows the same semi-flat top design. This machine was unveiled at the recently concluded SMOPyC construction equipment exhibition in Zaragoza (Spain) and is now on its way to Australia.
This crane has a maximum 85m jib and 24t capacity. Titan had considerable input into the design of the Jaso electric luffing J280-18/24T crane because of the importance of luffing cranes to the Australian market. Titan says the J280-18/24T electric luffing crane is the most compact crane in its class.
It features a maximum 80m freestanding tower height, the latest variable speed electric drives on all functions, super high winch speeds and secondary brakes on both luff and hoist mechanisms. Pin connectors on the tower sections and a maximum component weight of 6t make this an easy crane to erect and recover.
The J280-18t lifts 3t at its maximum 60m radius and will lift a maximum 24t specially configured and 18t as standard. Maximum line pull (single line) is 9t. A unique internal climbing system can be employed, and its compact dimensions allow it to fit into tight lift shafts.
Titan’s sister company B&D Crane Hire erected the Canberra crane, while local mobile cranes were used for the Adelaide project. B&D operates a modern crane fleet ranging from Frannas to a 130t Grove all terrain crane, and has recently taken delivery of a new 70t Liebherr all terrain crane. Modern all terrain cranes are a strength of the fleet and B&D is looking to update its 80t all terrain crane in the near future.
The close association with Titan allows B&D to offer tower crane supply, erection and dismantling packages to the Canberra and southern NSW markets.

Largest Electric Crane Operating in Australia
Titan Cranes and Rigging Pty Ltd are proud to announce the delivery and erection of their first Jaso J600-24t Series II tower crane to Australia. This crane supersedes Titans Jaso J600-20t Series I. The J600-24t is the largest electric crane currently operating in Australia and is certainly impressive with its state of the art electronics and physical size.
The J600-24t has a remarkable load chart and at present boasts 4.1T @ 85m as its best radial lift. Its maximum capacity is 48t using a shortened jib and 24t with full jib. This crane can free-stand at an incredible 98m and also uses a semi flat top design. This ensures great stability in operation, structural longevity and a very smooth erection process. It is the best of both worlds.
Titan erected the first of our J600-24t fleet for a prestigious project on a site in Adelaide this year. This project will be using two J600-24t in total and will be completing some very important lifts. The first crane was erected onto 11 towers with a HuH of 68m and top kit with 69m jib configuration in 9 hours!! It went together incredibly well and we look forward to the next erection.
Our next J600-24t is due to be erected in the ACT shortly.

First Jaso J280-18T Electric Luffing Tower Crane in Australia
Titan Cranes and Rigging Pty Ltd are proud to announce the delivery and erection of their first Jaso J280-18T Electric Luffing tower crane to Australia. This crane was designed in conjunction with Titan cranes to help make the crane the best high rise crane on the Australian market. The J280-18t is the most compact electric Luffing crane on the market for its capabilities, and boasts incredible winch speeds, free-stands and drivability. Component weights are kept under 6T for easy recovery on high-rise buildings as well as easier erection processes. The crane uses state of the art German braking technology and also boasts the best Variable speed drive systems for all its functions.
The crane has been designed around an ingenious internal climbing system which again offers great climbing speed, compaction for tight lift shafts, minimal impact to structures and awesome freestanding out the last chock.( Contact us for more information). The J280-18t has a solid load chart and at present boasts 3.0t @ 60m as its best radial lift whilst still being able to lift max 18T in the full configuration. Its maximum capacity is 24t using a shortened jib. The J280 can free-stand at an incredible 80m ( tower only! ) This equates to approximately 140m HUH.
Rigging wise the crane has simple bridle rigging techniques, laid flat counterweight available in solid steel billet or concrete, secondary brakes on both luff and hoist mechanisms, as well as many other ingenious designs. The crane can weather vane at a minimum radius of 12m if required also.
The towers are all pin connections making for quicker erection times than our competitors. The crane has 9T line pull and can be configured in single fall application and maximum 2 falls for 18T operation. It can work to heights of over 600m.
Electric Luffing cranes must be the future on most construction sites requiring a Luffing crane. With performance that rivals or in most cases outperform diesel cranes, and the capacities to deal with high rise construction, Electric cranes are definitely the present and future. This crane also boasts energy saving technology, as well as low servicing costs and minimal impact to environment through noise and emissions. Running costs alone should be reason enough to consider this type of crane especially in this day and age where budgets rule.
Titan erected the first of our J280-18t fleet for a high rise project site in Sydney this year. This project will be constructed of all pre- cast panels proving that this crane has not only the usability but the grunt for heavier lifting on construction sites. The first crane was erected onto 9 towers with a HuH of 100m and top kit with 60m jib configuration in a day. It went together incredibly well and we look forward to the next erection. The crane will be tied and externally climbed to full height over the next year.
Our next J280-18t is due to be erected in the Brisbane shortly.

Mariani's Titan Cranes car wins Nitro Championship and first-ever title
Rapisarda Racing - Seventh Annual Nitro Champs, Sydney Dragway, Eastern Creek, NSW
2009-2010 ANDRA Pro Series Drag Racing, Australian Top Fuel Championship
Mark Mariani took out his first-ever Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) Pro Series title when he won Top Fuel at the recent Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway (SD), Eastern Creek.
While it was Mariani’s first title, it was the second time team-owner Santo Rapisarda has won the Nitro Champs since the event’s inception in 2004. Alan Dobson won for the Western Sydney-based Rapisarda Racing in 2007. Dobson was also runner-up last year.
The win capped-off an emotional weekend for Rapisarda; with the event also a round of the Louie Rapisarda Top Fuel Tribute, which marks the 20th anniversary of Santo’s son Louie’s passing in a tragic race accident at Willowbank Raceway in July 1990 and was a week after what, would have been Louie’s birthday. Rapisarda said the Nitro Champs win meant so much to him, his family and the entire Rapisarda team.
"This (Nitro Champs) win really means so much to me, my two sons, Santo Jnr and Santino and the whole (Rapisarda) team. This event was all about my son Louie. This is a fitting memorial to Louie," Rapisarda said.
"I really had a feeling that this weekend was our event.
"It's (the Nitro Champs win) been a long time coming. Two years ago we won this event then last year we were runner-up, but we (Rapisarda Racing) have not done much since and now we have won again," Rapisarda said.
After the second qualifying session, second-generation Top Fuel drag racer Mariani was in second place with a 5.066sec at 283.79mph time.
Mariani did not go out for the third and final qualifying session, resulting in him slipping to fifth spot behind top qualifier Darren Morgan (4.669/323.66).
In a close round one elimination race, Mariani defeated fourth qualifier and teammate Dobson (4.850/279.15) with his quickest-ever pass, a 4.820sec at 296.63mph. Mariani (4.806/275.96) then defeated Morgan (4.840/272.83) in the semi final, bettering his previous quickest-ever pass.
In the final, Mariani (4.975/267.27) defeated Phil Read (5.052/258.32), despite the engines in both cars being on fire as they crossed the finish line.
Team Rapisarda head tuner, Glenn Mikres said Mariani’s Titan Cranes car had fuel pump issues during the event.
"The car had some sort of fuel issue. We chased it (fuel problem) and it got a little better and then it got a little worst. It was probably a fuel pump issue.
"In the heat of battle you keep feeding it (the engine) parts and at the end of the day if it cost you a few pieces (parts) to get the win then that's what you do," Mikres said.
After the event, Mariani, who is in his first full season driving for Team Rapisarda, said it was awesome to win his first event at his home track in front of family and friends. "This (win) is unbelievable. We were pretty confident that we would go some (elimination) rounds. And the further we went the more confident we became. It is unbelievable, for Santo, the team, Titan Cranes, all our sponsors, everyone," Mariani said.
"My mother and father were here to see this win, which was awesome. They don't come to all my races, so it was very emotional for them and me.
"My Dad, Mario, was a Top Fuel racer, but he never got to win a final. He was runner-up many times and it was Santo (Rapisarda) or Jim Read that beat him in the final. I am the first in the family to win an ANDRA gold Christmas Tree (trophy)."
Mariani said he did not enjoy racing teammate Dobson in round one of eliminations. "Running a teammate is never good, but at least one of us was going to go to the semi-final and that was good for Santo and the team.
"We just did our job, that's what we're here for and I just happened to get to the finish line first."
Mariani was also delighted he ran personal best times during eliminations. "I ran a personal best (time) in round one and then bettered that in the semi (final), which just topped off the weekend. All I have to do now is run a 300mph pass and then I suppose keep bettering our time."
Mariani has now moved back into fourth place with 390 points in the ANDRA Pro Series, behind leader Martin Stamatis (505pts). However, Mariani (223pts) now leads the three-round $25,000 Shannons Top Fuel Shootout. He leads Stamatis (187pts) and Read (185pts).
The final round for both the ANDRA Pro Series and Shannons Shootout is at next month’s Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway.
